Alfaro's 1st-Team All-CCAA Honor Leads Five Toros Named

Tony Alfaro earns his first 1st-team All-CCAA selection to lead five Toros named
TURLOCK -- Having fallen out of the NCAA West Region's top 8 teams and with a proverbial do-or-die match against top-seeded and No. 8 Cal Poly Pomona looming tomorrow at 4:30 pm as the first semifinal in this year's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros earned five All-CCAA awards tonight at the pre-tournament banquet, led by Tony Alfaro's 1st-team All-CCAA honor.

Pedro Velasquez and Jose Vaca earned 2nd-team honors, with Edson Lemus and Joey Chica being named honorable mention.

Three of the five CSUDH winners (L-R): 2nd-team Pedro Velasquez, 1st-team Tony Alfaro, 2nd-team Jose Vaca

Already with a 3rd-team NSCAA All-Region selection and a pair of 2nd-team All-CCAA honors in his first two seasons as a Toro, Alfaro picked up his first 1st-team nod after leading a team comprised of mostly newcomers to 4th place in the CCAA and a 1st-round win over CS San Bernardino last Sunday in which the Toro defense held the Coyotes to zero shots on goal and just six attempts total.

On the year, CSUDH has posted 5 shutouts and 7 games with just one goal scored.

A transfer from Loyola Marymount, junior Velasquez has played just 13 games this season, but still leads the team in goals and points.  Vaca, meanwhile, in his third season in the midfield, earns his first league honor after leading the team in assists entering the showdown with Cal Poly Pomona tomorrow afternoon.

Junior mid Lemus and freshman mid Chica round out the award-winning quintet with honorable mention honors.  Chica has scored three goals this season that includes a game-winner in a 1-0 victory over then No. 5 Chico State, while Lemus has tallied a score and three assists, with his game-winner coming in a 2-1 decision over CS Monterey Bay.
