Cal State L.A. Survives in 70-59 Win Over Toros to Start CCAA Play

CARSON -- Led by senior Darnell Martin, Cal State Dominguez Hills went on a 21-0 run in the second half, but visiting Cal State L.A. weathered the Cardinal and Gold storm en route to a 70-59 win to kick off California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play for both teams.

Martin finished with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor in the setback as CSUDH evens its record to 3-3, while falling to 0-1 CCAA.

"We learned a tough lesson about not playing with urgency from the start," begins CSUDH interim head coach Steve Becker.  "I commend Cal State L.A. who came out and played harder than we did in the first half, building a lead that ultimately was too much to overcome, but am proud of our guys sticking together and cutting the lead to three points late in the second half."

It was all Cal State L.A. in the first 20 minutes of play as the visitors connected for 15 of its 32 attempts from the floor, including 4-of-8 from 3-point land.  Conversely, the Toros made just 7 shots from the floor as the Golden Eagles took a 36-24 lead entering the break.

Cal State L.A. continued to put the pressure on the hosts, running out to a 24 point lead at 56-32 at the 12:47 mark before Martin led a frenetic charge that nearly brought the Toros all the way back.

Martin scored five-consecutive points including a tremendous two-handed jam after an offensive board, before Mike Hill connected for a triple to bring the score to 56-40.

Another old-fashioned 3-point play by Martin cut three more points off CSULA's lead, with Martin adding six more points in the run to bring the Toros to within 56-53 at 5:06 to complete a monstrous 21-0 surge.

A Dustin Watts jumper ended the drought, with a pair of Joshua Munzon freebies and a Watts triple giving CSULA breathing room down the stretch en route to the 70-59 final.

"We learned a lot about ourselves tonight, and need to have short-term memory to have a good week of practice before hosting Chico State and Stanislaus next weekend," concludes Becker.

Ivan Dooley added 15 points in the loss, with CSULA taking full advantage of CSUDH's 21 turnovers to the tune of a 25 to 16 points off turnovers edge and a 15 to 3 advantage in steals.

CSUDH will continue its CCAA schedule on Friday as Chico State visits the Torodome for a 7:30 pm first tip on Friday.  The game will be streamed live on CollegeTVTicket.com for a small fee.
