Martin's Double-Double Not Enough in 62-58 Loss at Point Loma

SAN DIEGO -- Senior Darnell Martin tallied 15 points and 13 boards for tonight's only double-double, but host Point Loma boasted three players in double-figure scoring, including Junior Morgan who went for a game-high 22 points, en route to a competitive 62-58 non-conference win over the Toros.

CSUDH dips to 1-2 on the young season.

The Sea Lions jumped out early, taking a 12-5 lead before Shaq Hunter cut the lead to just four with a triple.

A Martin layup at the 14:02 mark brought CSUDH to within a bucket, before a 4-minute scoring drought by both teams followed.

Emmett Duvall broke the dry spell with a basket to tie the game at 12-12, only to have PLNU answer with consecutive 3-pointers to stretch its lead to six with half the half elapsed, before entering the locker room up 26-21.

An 8-2 run increased the host's advantage to double figures two minutes into the half, where it stayed until the 15-minute mark.

That's when a Hunter bucket and a pair of made freebies by Chris Collins brought the Toros to just six, before a Justin Sadler layup at 7:14 giving CSUDH its first lead at 47-46 since a 3-2 edge early in the first half.

The euphoria didn't last long, however, as PLNU rattled off seven-straight points to take the lead for good, never letting the Toros get closer than four points down the stretch in the eventual four-point final.

The Toros shot well from the floor (41.7%), but missing nine of their 23 attempts from the line (60.9%) proved costly as PLNU missed just six of its 19 attempts.

Duvall added 10 boards and nine points in the loss, with Hunter also chipping in with nine points.

The Toros kick off their 2014 home schedule on Friday, November 21, hosting Westmont College for a 7:30 pm first tip.

Fans can watch the game live on College TV Ticket by registering and selecting CSUDH from the dropdown school menu to find the game.  David Smock and Marc Serber from the Toro Sports Network will call all the play-by-play live as it happens.
