Huge Second Half Pushes Toros to 73-65 Win Over Westmont

CARSON -- Cal Sate Domingez Hills shot 51.9% from the field in the second half to erase a 31-27 halftime deficit as David Gonzalez scored 9 of his team-high 15 points to push the Toros to a come-from-behind 73-65 win over visiting Westmont College in CSUDH's home opener.

A non-defensive first half developed in which Westmont shot 55.0% from the floor compared to 44.4% for the hosts, with Warrior Cory Blau leading all scorers with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field en route to a four-point cushion at the break.

The second half saw the Toros heat up behind nine points each by Gonzalez and Ivan Dooley, while holding Westmont to just 38.2% shooting including 30.8% from down town.

After Westmont creeped out to a 35-29 edge, the Toros chipped away at their deficit as a Dooley triple and Jonathan Nichols fast-break layup brought the Toros back to within one, with a Gonzalez triple at 14:59 knotting the game at 37-37.

Six ties ensued before CSUDH finally seized control of the game, with a 3-pointer by Chris Carvin starting the run.

After a bucket by Shaq Hunter gave the Toros a six-point lead, CSUDH finally came alive at the line as Dooley, Carvin, Hunter and Nichols combined to hit 10 of 12 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Free throw shooting was a struggle for both teams tonight with Westmont connecting for over just half its attempts (10-for-18) while CSUDH suffered more, missing 16 of its 31 attempts despite its late surge.

Blau led all scorers with 21 points but was the lone Warrior to hit the double-figure mark.

A key to the win was committing just nine turnovers while Darnell Martin posted the game's lone double-double.

CSUDH will travel to Biola on Wednesday, before returning home to face cross-town rival Cal State L.A. on Saturday to kick off the CCAA ledger.
