Otters Hand Toros Bad Treat in 5-Set Thriller

SEASIDE, CA -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team went searching for their Halloween treats in Seaside, but host Cal State Monterey Bay held the final trick in taking a 25-11, 27-29, 24-26, 25-15, 15-13 decision right before the stroke of midnight (Central Standard Time).

Freshman Hailey Smith led the Toros with 15 kills and digs, while Claire Autry had 9 blocks as CSUDH dropped to 2-18 overall and 1-15 in the CCAA.

After a lackluster 25-11 opener, the Toros roared back in the second, coming back from 10-6 and 20-14 deficits to catch CSUMB at 22 on a Dana Brown ace.  The teams tied again at 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27, before Alijah Gunsaulus' serve caused an Otter attack error, with an ensuing ace knotting the match at one set each.

CSUMB forged a tough third set win after the hosts held three set points as the Otters scored the final five points of the set for a 2-1 lead.

That momentum was short-lived as the Toros took set four in a convincing 25-14 decision behind the strong serving of Korryne Kelley and Autry as a Gunsaulus kill and Otter attack error tied the match at 2-2.

In the fifth, the teams tied at each of the first five integers, before CSUMB eeked out to a 2-point lead at 11-9.  That lead increased to three at 13-10 on a Toro attack error before the Otters held a 14-11 lead on a solo block.

CSUDH wouldn't go down fighting, however, fighting off a pair of match points before Julia Ashen ended the match with her 10th and final kill.

Gunsaulus finished with 13 kills and Brown 10, with Leilani Martinez tallying a match-high 20 digs to lead four Toros with at least 10 saves.  Brown also notched her first career triple double, adding 23 assist and 10 digs to her statline.

CSUDH will look for a road split tomorrow night at Cal State East Bay, with first serve set for 7 pm.  The match will be stream by CSUEB and can be seen here.
