Pioneers Take Decisive 3-0 Win Over Toros

HAYWARD -- Host Cal State East Bay hit nearly .300 for the match while limiting visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills to just .150 as the Pioneers took a 25-17, 25-21, 25-21 win over the Toros tonight in CCAA action.

Alijah Gunsaulus (pictured) and Hailey Smith led the Toros with nine kills each as CSUDH drops to 2-19, 1-16 CCAA.

The night started strong for the home team. After CSUDH led briefly, East Bay went on  a 7-1 run to gain a 14-10 advantage. The Pioneers never trailed after that, and they posted a .400 hitting percentage with just one attack error in finishing off the eight-point victory.

They continued their momentum into game two and jumped out to a 5-1 lead. But this time, Dominguez Hills rallied back and gave the Pioneers trouble on the block. Midway through the frame, the Toros won four straight points to take an 18-13 lead on the strong serve of Dana Brown, the last coming on a service ace.

After an East Bay time out, however, the hosts won five straight to tie the score, and finished the set on a 7-2 run.

Following intermission, the Pioneers were able to take care of business and finish off the sweep in game three. They never trailed in the set, taking a 7-3 lead and holding off CSUDH's attempts to rally back.

The match was closer than the final scored indicated as the teams put down the same number of balls, with East Bay earning just three more points.

Errors again were the culprit for the Toros as they made 22 compared to just 11 for East Bay.  Aces also accounted for three extra points for EB after eight compared to five for CSUDH.

The Toros return home next week for their final three matches in the Torodome, starting with cross-town rival Cal State L.A. on Wednesday.
