Toros Forge Tremendous Comeback in 3-2 OT Win Over Sonoma State on Senior Day

CARSON -- Neither a CCAA Title nor an NCAA West Region Title was on the line, but that didn't diminish a clash between Cal State Dominguez Hills and arch-rival Sonoma State to close the Toros' regular season homestand as Israel Murguia bicycle kicked home the golden goal in the first overtime to lift the Toros to a 3-2 win after SSU scored the game's first two goals to send the two Toro seniors off with a win on "Senior Day."

The Toros remain in 3rd place in the CCAA standings with three games left in the regular season, and move to 8-6-1, 6-2 CCAA, while SSU falls to 7-7-1, 2-5-1 CCAA.

Sonoma State proved that records don't matter when these two teams meet, by having the better play early, despite a 6-3 advantage in shots by the Toros in the first half.

Cedric Dinane struck first for the visitors, collecting a ball at the top fo the penalty kick box, and sending his blast off the crossbar and into the back of the net at the 8:45 mark, stunning the Cardinal and Gold and deflating the Toros from a three-game winning streak coming into the game.

A testy contest, SSU's Jose Avalos was issued a second yellow card in the 27th minute, giving the Toros hope.

Sonoma State, however, was the team that capitalized in the 66th minute as Armando Coronel stole a ball from a CSUDH defender in the box, and sent his shot into the upper left corner of the net to double SSU's lead.

That seemed to finally wake the Toros up as defender Tony Alfaro positioned himself in front of the SSU box and collected a feed from Jose Vaca, heading his shot up and over SSU keeper Sean Taufer to cut the Toro deficit in half in the 72nd minute.

Less than eight minutes later, Ali Nazari followed Alfaro's lead by leaping for a loose ball in front of the Seawolf net, and heading his own score past Taufer for the equalizer, sending the game into overtime.

In the extra period, Irvin Aguiniga sent a cross from the right side to the top corner of the 6 yard box, where Murguia wheeled himself for his game-winning effort that collided with the inside of the post and trickled in past a dismayed Taufer for the golden goal.

The Toros amped up their defense after the break, tallying a 9-5 edge en route to a 17-8 overall advantage, also pushing the offense to the tune of an 8-1 edge in corners.

Toro keeper Dylan Roberts finished with 4 saves on the afternoon to help send the Toro seniors out with a win, with Taufer saving 6 balls.

Prior to the contest, the Toros honored two seniors in Santos Romero and Tim Harty, who played in the final regular season home game in their careers.
