Toros Clinch CCAA Berth After Settling for 1-1 2OT Draw at Cal State East Bay

HAYWARD -- Needing one win in its final three regular season games to clinch one of six berths into next weekend's California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships Tournament, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros settled for a 1-1 double-overtime draw at Cal State East Bay, but punched its ticket to the tournament after Cal State Stanislaus dropped a 1-0 decision earlier tonight.

Ali Nazari scored CSUDH's goal as the Toros move to 8-6-2, 6-2-1 CCAA with two regular season games to play.

The Toros currently sit in third place in the standings, with the top two seeds receiving a first round bye on November 2, with seeds three and four hosting six and five, respectively, at their home fields.

CSUDH is four points ahead of both UC San Diego, whom they play in the regular season finale on Thursday, and CS San Bernardino, with Humboldt State just a point ahead of seventh-place CSUS, which can still sneak into the tournament if it ends the season with one more win than the Jacks in the final two games.

In order to clinch the No. 3 seed, CSUDH will have to win just one of its final two games, with either UCSD and or CSUSB splitting the final two games, or tying both.

In tonight's match-up, both teams kept pace with the other through the first 43 minutes, until Nazari gave the guests a 1-nil lead after a Joey Chica feed to Edson Lemus set up the score, with Lemus feeding Nazari for a half volley to the lower corner of the far post net.

The joy didn't last long, however, as East Bay used its 9 to 6 shot edge to its advantage 16 minutes alter, with Chris Lara dribbling past a Toro defender, centering himself and blasting his shot past keeper Chase Gentry for the equalizer, where it remained through regulation.

CSUDH took all three shots in the first overtime to no avail, with each side firing off two shots in the second extra period.

Both keepers came up huge, with Gentry finishing with six saves while Pio keeper Adrian Topete ending with eight.

The Toros will look to solidify their postseason seed at CCAA tournament host Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday, also looking to gain familiar footing in hopes of playing there again on November 7 in one of two semifinals.
