Toros Move Into Third in CCAA After 2-0 Win Over Humboldt State

Bryan Haley's defense played a huge role in tonight's win as the Toros moved into third place in the CCAA

CARSON -- Coming into tonight's CCAA contest in a two-way tie for fourth with visiting Humboldt State, the red-hot Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team picked up its third-consecutive win by virtue of a 2-0 decision over the Lumberjacks, passing a key late-season test and moving into sole possession of third place in the league standings.

Jaime Rios and Joey Chica each knocked home a score, while Tony Alfaro and Bryan Haley led the defense to perhaps its most impressive shutout of the year.

CSUDH improves to 7-6, 5-2 CCAA, while HSU drops to 8-4-1, 4-3 CCAA.

The Toros dominated the night, tallying an overall 16-2 shot advantage, including 10-1 in the first half.

Much to HSU's credit, the Jack defense kept the Toros out of the net until the final minute of the half.

Taken down in the Jack box, Rios converted on his penalty kick attempt to give the hosts a 1-nil edge at the 44:23 mark.

CSUDH doubled its lead just over seven minutes later when Joey Chica collected a loose ball and sent it past HSU keeper Javier Torres for an insurance goal.

That was plenty for Toro keeper Chase Gentry and his defense, which notched their fourth shutout of the year.

The Toros conclude their regular season homestand on Sunday as arch-rival Sonoma State visits Toro Stadium for a 2:00 pm first kick. Prior to the match, CSUDH will honor its two seniors in Santos Romero and Tim Harty.
