Lemus Nets Golden Goal as Toros Topple CS Monterey Bay, 2-1

Box Score

CARSON -- A cross from the left side, a redirect to the middle and a one-touch 1:15 minute into the first overtime period proved a winning combination for the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team as Toro Edson Lemus provided the heroics to lift CSUDH to a thrilling 2-1 win over visiting CS Monterey Bay on a sunny Sunday afternoon on University Field 1.

The Toros now have won two-straight to improve to 6-6-1, 4-2 CCAA, and into a tie for 4th in league with Humboldt State, which visits Carson next Friday.

CSUMB, meanwhile, drops to 2-6-3, 1-4-1 CCAA after the thriller.

The Toros got on the board first as Pedro Velasquez continued his stellar play after assisting on both goals in Friday's Stub Hub Center Main Stadium win over San Francisco State.

The fleet-footed forward collected a loose ball and headed straight for the goal before being upended by Otter keeper Matias Fernandez, who received a yellow card in the process, giving Velasquez a penalty kick attempt.

Velasquez made sure he converted, nestling his shot into the twine.

That's where the score remained until the 71:00 mark when Monterey Bay equalized on a beautiful effort by Jovani Delacruz, who collected a centering cross by Eduarado Avalos 8 yards from the host goal, executed a self volley and hammered his shot past CSUDH keeper Dylan Roberts for a 1-1 tie, eventually sending the game into overtime.

CSUDH, however, didn't take long to end the overtime as a Jose Vaca free kick was collected by Tony Alfaro at the second post, with Alfaro one-touching to Lemus for his game-winner at 91:15.

The Toros managed a 23-19 shot advantage with the two keepers saving a combined 15 shots in the offensive contest.

Irvin Aguiniga with five and Joey Chica with four shots paced the Toro offense in the win.

The Toros hook up with the Lumberjacks on Friday, October 17, with the time and location of the match to be announced this week.
