Toros Survive in 75-62 Win Over CS Monterey Bay

Breanne Garcia provided much-needed energy in tonight's win
Box Score

CARSON -- With tomorrow's showdown looming against a potential CCAA tournament foe, the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team couldn't afford to look past tonight's opponent in Cal State Monterey Bay.  But look ahead they did in a less-than-sharp performance that was enough in a 75-62 win that was closer than the score indicated.

With the win, the Toros improve to 13-4, 11-4 CCAA, while the Otters fall to 4-12, 1-12 CCAA as Breanne Garcia provided a much-needed spark with her 16 points, 5 assist, 4 rebound performance.

Additionally, with Cal State East Bay's loss at Cal State L.A. tonight, the Toros and Pioneers sit tied for second place in the CCAA.

The visitors took a quick 9-2 lead thanks to 5 points by Ashley Morgan and a decisive 5-1 rebound advantage. But four consecutive points by Simone Thompson via the free throw line and a fast break layup brought the Toros to within 14-10, with two Kielyn Wilson free throws bringing the deficit to just two.

CSUDH tied the game at 17 after Monay Lee drained one of two free throw attempts at the 8:49 mark, and took its first lead of the game after a pair of Shomari McCorkle free throw makes, extending it to 21-17 on a Tayler Champion offensive board and put back.

The Toros continued to put pressure on the Otters as Amber Wharton drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key while getting fouled, sinking the ensuing free throw for a four-point play for a 29-22 edge.

The lead increased to 33-20 after Lee converted an old-fashioned three-point play en route to a 35-27 halftime edge.

After the break, CSUMB came out on fire, outscoring the Toros 10-1 to retake the lead at 37-36 the 15:58 mark, only to have the Toros reply with their own 12-5 run to sieze control of the contest heading into the halfway point of the period.

Up 58-47 with 6:24 to play, a missed Otter free throw resulted a fast break opportunity, and a dish from Wilson to Garcia followed with an up and under reverse layup that bounced around the rim and tickled the twine as she was fouled, with her ensuing free throw make bringing the Toros to a 61-47 advantage, looking to put the game away.

The Otters, however, would not go away quietly as they cut their deficit to just 63-56 with over three minutes left in regulation, but the Toros would convert their free throws down the stretch to counter the Otter advance in the eventual 75-62 win.

CSUMB's Ashley Morgan led all scorers with 21 points but was the only Otter to reach double-figure scoring while four Toros hit the double-figure plateau, led by Lee's 18, Garcia's 16, Champion's 12 and Amber Wharton's 11 points.

Aggressive play won the game for the Toros as they converted 35 of 42 free throw attempts compared to just 16 of 24 for the visitors.

The Toros will try to take sole possession of 2nd place tomorrow night as CS East Bay visits Carson, with first tip set for 5:30 pm in the Torodome.  The game will be streamed on the Toro Sports Network.
