Lee's 32 Pushes Win Streak to Five in 72-62 Win Over Sonoma State

Box Score

CARSON -- Sophomore Monay Lee nearly matched her career high with 32 points as Cal State Dominguez Hills pushed its win streak to five after a 72-62 win over a scrappy Sonoma State squad in the first game of the new calendar year for both teams.

With the win, the Toros improve to 7-2, 3-2 CCAA, while the Seawolves fall to 2-7, 1-4 CCAA.

Lee got the Toros off on the right foot to begin the game, scoring 10 of the team's first 18 points en route to an 18-7 lead.

Lee continued her hot hand as she finished the first 20 minutes with 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 from the foul line as the Toros entered the break up 37-28.

The Seawolves shot 42.9% from the floor compared to 34.3% for the Toros, but CSUDH enjoyed a 23 to 16 rebound edge and a 10-0 advantage from the foul line in taking the 9-point cushion into the break.

Four quick points to begin the second half brought the Seawolves to within 37-32 and prompted a Toro time out, but SSU saw CSUDH miss two free throw attempts and two shots from the floor on three possessions, before a Breanne Garcia steal put an end to SSU's offense.

Garcia's offense was on display one possession later as her steal resulted in an up-and-under lay-up to push CSUDH's lead back to nine at 41-32 with 16:03 left in regulation.

SSU regrouped with an 8-2 run to close the gap to 43-40, before Lee scored her first basket of the second half with 13:51 left to give CSUDH a 5-point lead.

The Seawolves cut their deficit to just two on a made free throw by Taylor Acosta four minutes later at 53-51, but a 13-0 run over the next four minutes gave the hosts a 66-51 lead, all but putting the game away en route to the 72-62 final.

Garcia added 9 points and 7 steals, coming within just one theft of tying for the CSUDH single-game mark.

Lee finished shooting 10-of-22 from the field and 11-of-12 from the free throw line in the win, adding eight boards.

Kristina Fahey led the Seawolves with 13 as the visitors converted on 46.2% of their shots compared to just 33.3% for CSUDH, but the Toros enjoyed a 16 to 5 edge in steals and a whopping 52 to 26 edge on the boards in the double-digit win, the fifth-straight time the Toros have won by at least 10 points.

CSUDH will look to make it six-straight tomorrow night as San Francisco State vists Carson after taking down Cal State L.A. 80-57 earlier tonight.
