No. 17 Cal Poly Pomona Takes Advantage of Cold Shooting by Toros in 64-53 Decision

Box Score

CARSON -- It was only mid-January, but tonight's contest between No. 17 Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Dominguez Hills had all the makings of a mid-March affair, with the Broncos holding on for a 64-53 win as Tayler Champion led all scorers with 21 points in the loss.

The Toros fall to 10-4, 6-4 CCAA, while the Broncos improve to 12-2, 9-1 CCAA.

The Broncos continued where they left off after their hard-fought win at Cal State L.A. last night, taking a 10-5 lead with just over 5 minutes elapsed in the first half, with five of the points coming from JJ Judge, a lead stretched to 22-11 three minutes later.

Successive layups by Kielyn Wilson and Breanne Garcia, coupled with a charge taken by Shomari McCorkle, however, quelled the Bronco surge, and a triple by Tayler Champion brought the Toros to within four at 22-18 with 5:29 left in the first half, with Garcia becoming a non-factor in the first after picking up two quick fouls.

The Broncos maintained their lead after a pair of threes, and took a 33-26 lead into the half after connecting for 45.5% of their shots and a sizzling 75% of their threes, while Champion led the hosts with 14 points, with 12 coming via 3-point land.

A 6-2 run to open the second pushed CPP's lead to 39-28 until a Simone Thompson triple brought CSUDH to within eight at 39-31.

Two Broncos baskets, however, gave the guests breathing room at 43-31, until another Champion triple put some life into the hosts.

CPP, however, would maintain its lead until the 2:48 mark, taking a 57-46 lead into the homestretch.

Down 61-52 with 1:05 left, the Toros were forced to foul, and the Broncos responded with clutch free throw shooting down the stretch to put the game away in the eventual 64-53 decision.

CSUDH shot a frigid 24.2% from the floor and 22.9% from 3-point land, missing 7 of 20 attempts from the free throw line.

CPP, meanwhile, connected at a 46% clip from the floor and 50% from downtown, also missing seven attempts from the line in the contst.

Monay Lee added 18 in the loss while Ariel Marsh's 20 and Jada Blackwell's 13 led four Broncos who scored in double figures.

The Toros will take to the road next weekend, starting at UC San Diego on Friday.
