Tayler Champion led all scorers with 16 points in tonight's convincing win
Box Score

CARSON -- The teams were separated by just one game coming into tonight's match-up, but the difference on the floor was considerably wider as Cal State Dominguez Hills scored early and often en route to a convincing 79-61 victory over visiting Humboldt State tonight in the Torodome as CSUDH enjoyed a decisive 38-29 rebounding edge in the win, with 20 coming on the offensive end.

Tayler Champion led all scorers with 16 points as the Toros improved to 10-3, 6-3 CCAA, while the Lumberjacks dropped to 7-6, 4-5 CCAA.

The first half was all CSUDH as the hosts hit half their shots from the field with Monay Lee leading the Toros with 8 points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field.

CSUDH's defense took center stage to the tune of an 8-0 steal advantage that led to turning the ball over 13 times compared to just 4 for the Toros, with Breanne Garcia becoming a primary beneficiary with 4 assists as the hosts took a 40-24 lead into the break.

After intermission, the Jacks came out on fire, putting together an 8-0 run to cut their deficit to just 40-32.

A pair of Toro triples, however, gave the hosts breakthing room at 46-32 with 17:12 left in regulation, the last by Garcia from the corner.

Another trey, this time by Talia Rayford, pushed the lead to 17 on CSUDH's next possession, with a pair of Champion freebies bringing the Toro lead to 60-41 with just over 10 minutes left.

CSUDH maintained its significant double-figure lead over the next six minutes, with a Lee drive down the lane and lay-up give the Toros a 72-52 lead with four minutes left, all but sealing the game with a couple late Jack scores bringing the final to the 79-61 count.

Champion's 16 led five Toros who reached the 10-point plateau, with Lee's 15, Rayford's 13, Simone Thompson's 12 and Julia Poecksteiner's 10 points providing a balanced and offensive attack.

Free throw shooting, however, usually one of the Toros' strong suits, left much to be desired tonight as CSUDH misfired on 10 of 23 attempts, a stat they'll need to improve upon as No. 17 Cal Poly Pomona visits the Torodome tomorrow night, set for a 5:30 pm tip.

Prior to the start of the game, ukulele artist Josh Cahill will entertain the audience with his rendition of the National Anthem.
