Toros Take Advantage of Second Chance in 68-62 Win at CS Stanislaus

Box Score

TURLOCK -- Coming off a two-point heartbreaking loss last night in Chico, the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team received a second chance tonight, literally, and rode it to a 68-62 win at Cal State Stanislaus to split the weekend road trip.  Tayler Champion led the Toros with 19 points while Monay Lee's (pictured) 12 points and 10 boards gave her the game's lone double-double in the win.

With the decision, CSUDH improves to 9-3, 5-3 CCAA.

Despite shooting just 36.5% from the field and an un-Toro-like 59.3% from the foul line, the Toros capitalized on the boards to the tune of an 11 rebound advantage over the hosts, with a 16-9 edge in offensive boards resulting in a whopping 14-3 second chance points stat in favor of the visitors which proved huge in the win.

The lethal combination of Lee and Champion accounted for the game's first five points, with another Champion bucket giving CSUDH a 12-4 lead with nearly nine minutes elapsed in a low-scoring first half.

A Lee triple at the 7:40 mark gave the Toros their first double-figure lead at 22-12 as a Simone Thompson free throw put the Toros up 38-21 before a late Warrior triple made the score 38-24 entering the break.

A 12-4 run by the hosts over the first six mintues of the second half brought Stanislaus to within striking distance at 42-36, but a Talia Rayford jumper four minutes later capped a 10-5 run by the Toros that made the score 52-41, accounting for the last bucket in a five minute scoreless stretch by both teams until a Kielyn Wilson layup at the 5:50 mark pushing CSUDH's lead to 54-41.

The Warriors closed the game with a 21-14 run, but it was too little, too late in the 68-62 decision.

Champion added 8 boards to her statline with Rayford (11 points, 9 rebounds) and Thompson (10 points, 9 rebounds) each just missing a double-double.

The Toros will return home next weekend to face Humboldt State on Friday, January 17, with first tip set for 5:30 pm in the Torodome, on the "Dave Yanai Court."  The game will be streamed live on the Toro Sports Network.
