Box Score Box

AZUSA -- Junior newcomer Heriberto Ponce, Jr. scored on a one-touch goal in the 18th minute at host Azusa Pacific, and that effort held up as the Toros took a 1-0 win over the Cougars on a hot, late summer day.

With the win, CSUDH improves to 2-0 on the year, with two shutout wins.

In a chippy game in which 11 cautions were issued, the Toros used an 11-7 shot advantage in the first half for the score as Ponce received a cross from Wyatt Stucker at the top fo the box, and slotted it past Cougar keeper Chip Cox for an early 1-0 lead.

That proved to raise the intensity in the contest, as a total of four cautions were issued before the half, with three going against the hosts.

After intermission, both defenses kept the opponents out of the net, despite the Toros making Cox make 5 saves with its high-octane offense.

Toro keeper Trey Mitchell, meanwhile, saved a total of 4 balls including one in the second half as CSUDH recorded its second consecutive shutout win.

CSUDH now begins CCAA Conference play on Friday as the Toros host UC San Diego in Toro Stadium, with first kick set for 7 pm.
