Wildcats Hand No. 14 Toros First Loss of Year in 2-1 Decision

Box Score

CARSON -- Visiting Chico State scored a pair of goals seven minutes apart in an offensive first half, and that was enough as the Wildcats handed 14th-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills its first loss of the year in a 2-1 win.

With the loss, CSUDH drops to 5-1-2, 3-1-2 CCAA, while the Wildcats improve to 6-2, 4-2 CCAA

The aggressive Wildcats started the scoring in the 26th minute after a spectacular one-handed diving stab by Sam Evans saving a header by Sebastian Cortez.

That sequence led to Joachim Gasmi collecting a rebounded shot from Octavio Guzman, and one-touching his shot past CSUDH keeper Trey Mitchell for a 1-0 lead.

The visitors doubled their advantage seven minutes later after Jake Ward settled in 18 yards in front of Mitchell, and sent his rocket to the upper left corner at 34:06.

That's where the score remained until the 86th minute when Aaron Salazar's free kick from 25 hit the crossbar, bounced down off keeper Evans and trickled past the goal line to cut the lead in half.

Chico State, however, continued to clear the ball over the final five minutes of play to hold on to the win.

The Toros will take to the road next weekend before returning home on October 11, hosting CS Stanislaus in the Stub Hub Center's Main Stadium.
