Gators Escape With 4-Set Win Over Toros

Box Score

CARSON -- Senior Abbey Prusa put down 17 kills and hit .438, but visiting San Francisco State kept Cal State Dominguez Hills winless in league play after a stirring 4-set decision on a warm Saturday night in the Torodome.

With the 19-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-27 loss, CSUDH drops to 7-5, 0-4 CCAA.

Set one saw the Toros take a quick 3-0 lead behind kills by Alijah Gunsauls and Tarryn Luafalemana and a Gator attack error, only to have the visitors regroup to take a 10-9 lead on a Toro attack error.

SFSU's lead reached as much as four at 18-14 on another Toro miscue before the Gators put set one away on three-consecutive CSUDH hitting errors.

The Gators looked to take a two-sets-to-none lead after taking a quick 6-2 edge in the next frame, until a pair of Abbey Prusa blasts kept the hosts in it.

The Toros caught the Gators at 7-7 and tied five more times before CSUDH took its first lead of the set at 18-17 on a Corissa Santos bomb.

SFSU, however, would not be deterred, catching the Toros at 18, 19, 20, 22 and 23, before the final two Prusa blasts evened the match at one set apiece heading into the 10-minute intermission.

After the break, the match turned into an ebb-and-flow for both teams as the Gators took a quick 4-1 lead, only to have the Toros regroup and build their own leads at 14-10 and 18-13, the 18th coming on a Prusa hammer.

True to momentum switches, SFSU outscored the Toros 10-1 to take a 23-19 lead, before a Whitney Lee putaway, an SFSU attacker error and a Dana Brown kill brought the set to 23-22 to give CSUDH hope.

SFSU, however, used two Meagan Wright kills to put the set away and take a two-to-one lead entering the fourth.

In the fourth, the teams tied early and often until the Toros took a 14-11 lead, the last point coming on a SFSU hitting error.

That lead was short-lived, however, as the Gators caught the Toros at 17-17, setting up a fantastic finish that saw the teams tie eight more times up to 25-all, until a pair of attack errors sealed the Toros' fate in the 4-set loss.

Alijah Gunsaulus added a match-high 18 kills and added 12 digs, with Elizabeth Krieger posting a match-high 24 digs in the loss.

As a team, SFSU hit .192 compared to .185 for the Toros, who have dropped four in a row after starting the season 7-1.

CSUDH will continue its homestand on Wednesday against cross-town rival Cal State L.A., set for a 7 pm first serve in the Torodome.
