Coyotes Hand Win to No. 14 Toros

Box Score

CARSON -- Junior Alejandro Covarrubias connected on a penalty kick in the 76th minute after visiting Cal State San Bernardino committed its second hand violation in the box, and that was enough to push the Toros to a 1-0 win over the Yotes on a crisp Friday night.

The win keeps the Toros unbeaten as they improve to 5-0-2, 3-0-2 CCAA.

CSUDH held a decisive 10-6 shot advantage in the first half, and had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 30th minute after the Yotes were called for a hand ball inside their box, but CSUSB keeper Jeff Salt guessed correctly to his right to block Jio Santana's penalty kick attempt.

The game remained scoreless until late in the game when it was deja vu all over again for the Yotes.

This time, however, Covarrubias made them pay as his direct shot caught Salt going the wrong way to give CSUDH a 1-0 lead.

The cushion was magnified by the Toros playing a man down for the final 50 minutes after Andrew Johnson was issued a red card.

The Toros ended up with a 14-6 shot edge and 6-3 advantage in corners, while CSUDH keeper Trey Mitchell made two saves in the shutout compared to six for Salt.

CSUDH will look to keep its unbeaten streak alive on Sunday as Chico State visits Toro Stadium for a 2:00 pm first kick.
