Toros Stumble in 4-Set Loss at Humboldt State

Box Score

ARCATA -- Newcomer Alijah Gunsaulus posted her first 20 kill effort for Cal State Dominguez Hills, but host Humboldt State's Ashley Owens put down 28 balls as the Lumberjacks picked up a 4-set win to drop the Toros to 0-2 in league play.

With the 25-21, 21-25, 21-25, 23-25 decision, CSUDH drops to 7-3 on the year.

The Toros started strong to begin the match, hitting .273 in the 25-21 win after jumping out to 5-point leads four times in the set.

HSU looked like it would crawl back after coming within a point at 21-20, only to have the Toros put away the set behind Gunsaulus.

Set two saw the Jacks jump out to an early 10-4 lead, and withstand a furious Toro rally late after an Abbey Prusa kill got CSUDH to within 20-19, with Owen collecting three of the final four HSU points in the frame with kills.

The following set was a repeat of set two as the hosts took an early lead and never gave it away, with Owen putting the finishing touch on a 25-21 win.

CSUDH looked to even the match after taking an early 6-2 lead in set four, until the Jacks knotted the set at 7-all, and forged six more ties during the frame.

Knotted at 19-19, Owen put down a pair of kills to give HSU control of the set, with a pair of kills by Gunsaulus only able to delay the Jack win after a Toro attack error gave the set and match to the hosts.

Despite a huge edge at the net that resulted in a 12-3 advantage in blocks, the Toros hit just .145 for the match in the loss.

Gunsaulus added 15 digs with Korryne Kelley chipping in 17 to lead the Toro defense.  Whitney Lee and Abbey Prusa added 8 kills each, with Lee tallying 6 block assists and one of the solo variety.

The Toros will look to get back in the win column next week as they open their home schedule against Sonoma State on Friday, set for a 7 pm first serve.
