Toros Held to 2-2 Double OT Tie by Cal Poly Pomona

Box Score

CARSON -- Visiting Cal Poly Pomona scored a goal in the 80th minute to answer a score by Patrick Fuchs six minutes earlier, and that was enough to forge a 2-2 double overtime tie between the two teams, CSUDH's second-consecutive double-overtime tie this weekend.

CSUDH moves to 2-0-2, 0-0-2 CCAA on the year, while CPP now stands at 2-1-1, 0-1-1 CCAA.

The visitors made themselves feel right at home in Toro Stadium as Adi Azran collected a soft rebound 18 yards out off a previous CPP shot attempt, and sent a screamer to the upper right corner past a leaping Trey Mitchell for a quick 1-0 lead at the 8:48 mark.

CPP's lead didn't last long, however, as senior All-American defender Ernie Ramos got offensive on a set piece in the 18th minute, heading a Sebastian Cortez corner kick past CPP keeper Andrew Todd for the equalizer.

The Toros kept the pressure on in the first half, missing on a couple of good chances including a collected through ball sent wide by Jio Santana and a 25 yard knuckle ball off an Alejandro Covarrubias free kick that was speared top shelf by Todd.

CSUDH again almost doubled its lead in the 70th minute when Heriberto Ponce, Jr. stole the ball deep in Bronco territory, whirled around and sent his blast off the post.

That served as a harbinger when four minutes later Fuchs sent a 20 yard free kick past Todd for a 2-1 lead, with an unofficial assist going to Ponce, who used his 6'2 frame to shield Todd from the oncoming bender.

CSUDH looked to make that lead hold up until reigning CCAA Player of the Week Luis Najera equalized, collecting a long through ball to Mitchell's left, and sending it to Mitchell's right for the tying score.

The only shot taken by either team came in the second overtime, with Miguel Vazquez securing possession after a scramble and spinning to free himself up for a look, only to send his 1v1 shot wide of the net in the 108th minute.

The Toros outshot CPP 16-6 for the game, and boasted a whopping 17-1 corner kick advantage.  A physical game, a combined 55 fouls were called, with eight cautions issued.

CSUDH will look to get into the league win column next weekend on the road, traveling to CS Monterey Bay and San Francisco State.
