Toros Tied Up Against No. 25 UC San Diego

Box Score

CARSON -- A fluke goal late in the second half by visiting and No. 25 ranked UC San Diego spoiled what was otherwise an uneventful Friday the 13th as the Tritons and Toros played to a 1-1 tie through regulation and two overtime periods.

Aaron Salazar provided the lone score for the Toros, who with UC San Diego moved to 2-0-1, 0-0-1 CCAA in an early battle of unbeatens.

In a scoreless first half where defense ruled, the teams combined for just six shots, with four coming from the hosts.

The visitors began to turn up their offense after the break by out-shooting the Toros 5-4, but a foul inside the Triton box gave Salazar a penalty kick opportunity, and the reigning CCAA Newcomer of the Year put the first score on the board with a drive to his left after Triton keeper Josh Cohen went the other way.

That score appeared to hold up heading into the 83rd minute, when Andisheh Bagheri collected a loose ball and sent it to Allessandro Canale 6 yards in front of Toro keeper Markus Dickerson.

Faced with a one-on-one, Canale sent a low line drive directly at Dickerson, who appeared to control the blast.  But the ball slipped through Dickerson's hands and squirted into the back of the net for the equalizer.

The two teams played through two overtime periods with the Toros earning a 5-1 shot advantage, including an 18 foot blast by Jordan Hatanaka that was speared by Cohen in the second overtime session, but neither team was able to earn the golden goal en route to the 1-1 tie.

The Toros out-shot UCSD 13-8 for the contest, with Cohen making three saves.

CSUDH will look to keep its unbeaten 2013 season intact on Sunday as Cal Poly Pomona visits Toro Stadium for a 2 pm first kick.
