Toros Scholarship Golf Classic Scores for CSUDH Student-Athletes

LONG BEACH -- Skylinks Golf Course played host last Friday to the 23rd Annual Toros Scholarship Golf Classic for a picture perfect day of golf and fun, with all proceeds going to Cal State Dominguez Hills student-athlete scholarships.

"I would like to thank everyone who participated in this year's golf tournament, and helped make it one in the most enjoyable events in recent memory," begins CSUDH Director of Athletics Patrick Guillen.

"We couldn't put on such a nice event without our sponsors and those who worked so diligently over the past several months to make today happen," he continued.  "A special thanks goes to our Business Mananger Tiffany Edlin, who does such a good job assisting in the organization of the day's events, as well as to our golf committee, staff and our student-athletes."

The Toros Scholarship Golf Classic featured 124 golfers with Scott Kelley, Athletics' resident music man at home volleyball and basketball games and father of volleyball player Korryne Kelley, serving as the event's emcee.

After the 1:30 pm shotgun start kicked off the modified scramble (shamble) format and golfers got their fill from a delicious barbeque lunch, they were welcomed by Kelley and Guillen once the day of golf ended, where opportunity drawings and silent auction items awaited them.

During the auction, men's basketball's Matt Cain and track and field's Charlene Brown spoke to the ballroom about their experiences as student-athletes as well as recipients of scholarships, and expressed their thanks to those who have come out to support throughout the years.

As for the round of golf, the team of Pat Burke, Peter Guillen and Brian Rosario took home the lowest gross score honor, with Mark Iwakiri, David Homon, Kevin Oshuria and Tsuyashi Kuramoto earning low net score.

The men's basketball quartet of CSUDH men's basketball assistant coach Steve Becker, Casey Becker, Brett Becker, along with Mike Wise, took home 2nd place net honors, with Francisco Reynoso, Mike Adame, Ron Eastman and Robert Garcia earning 3rd place net honors.

The team of Jamie Dote-Kwan, Erin Kwan, Gwen Brockman and Kim Barras earned the highly-coveted "Most Spirited" award for showing the most spirit of the day.

Individually, former CSUDH baseball assistant coach Josh Tavelli and Carson Companies' Bettie Woods took home longest drive awards, with Burke and Holiday Inn Long Beach's Bess Cruz earning closest to the pin honors.

This year's event featured Mercedes-Benz Hole-in-One challenges, which gave golfers opportunities to win two (2) round trip tickets on American Airlines, Club Glove travel bags, a 7-day Caribbean Cruise for 2 on Norwegian Cruise Lines and a 2014 E Class Sedan.
