22nd Annual Toro Scholarship Golf Tournament Scores for Student-Athlete Scholarships

LAKEWOOD -- The 22nd Annual Toros Scholarship Golf Classic welcomed a nearly sold-out contingent to the stunning Lakewood Country Club for a picture perfect day of golf and fun last Friday, with all proceeds going to Cal State Dominguez Hills student-athletes.

"I would like to thank everyone who supported and participated in this year's golf tournament, including our Cardinal & Gold Sponsors that helped make this year's tournament a resounding success," begins CSUDH Director of Athletics Patrick Guillen.

"Today we helped raise funds that will assist with student scholarships, which is no small feat as paying for a college education becomes more difficult in this economic climate, in an event that created lasting memories."

The Toros Scholarship Golf Classic, which serves as CSUDH Athletics' major fundraiser, featured CSUDH Director of Commecial Services and Golf Committee Co-Chair Richard Chester as the spirited emcee, while baseball head coach Murphy Su'a returned for live auction duties to conclude the evening.

After the 1:00 pm shotgun start kicked off the modified scramble (shamble) format and golfers got their fill from a delicious barbeque lunch, they were welcomed by Guillen, CSUDH Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs' Dr. Sue Borrego and Chester in the ballroom once the day of golf ended, where an opportunity drawing, silent auction items and a steak dinner awaited them.

Once the silent auction ended, Su'a brought the excitement to a new level during the live auction as a 5-night stay at the Mauna Lani Point Resort in Hawai'i, two tickets to the 2013 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Final Four good for both semifinals and the championship game, the best seats in Dodger Stadium (on the field behind home plate) and a JetBlue certificate plus a 3-day-/2-night stay in Orlando all became hot commodities towards the event's frenzied conclusion.

Between the auctions, women's soccer's #Paige Peel# spoke to the ballroom about her experience as a student-athlete as well as a recipient of the scholarships, and expressed her thanks to those who have come out to support throughout the years to a raucous applause.

As for the round of golf, the baseball quartet of Matt Phillips, Derek Duarte, Trevor Hayman and Ray Lopez claimed the lowest net score, with former CSUDH All-American Scott McDonald's quartet including Cameron McDonald, Mike Adame and Peter Guillen taking home second place.

Toros men's basketball head coach Damaine Powell teamed with Tyus Edney, Gary Anderson and Carl Chavez to take third, while Jamie Dote-Kwan, Erin Kwan, Gwen Brockman and Lisa Langford earned the highly-coveted "We Tried" award for best effort.

Individually, Gary Anderson and Carson Companies' Bettie Woods took home longest drive awards, with Watson Land Company's Len Peterson and Woods earning closest to the pin honors.

This year's event again featured the jetBlue Hole-In-One Challenge, which gave golfers the opportunity for great jetBlue golfing vacation packages.

"I especially want to thank my staff for the long hours they put in over the past several months leading up to this event, and specifically Office Manager Tiffany Edlin, who once again did a tremendous job of coordinating everyone's efforts leading up to and on the day of the event," continued Guillen.

"The success also is due in large part to the Golf Committee's efforts.  Without their hard work and support we would not have been able to put on such a great event.  And last but not least, I want to thank our student-athletes who came out to volunteer the entire day.  It gave our participants an opportunity to meet the special students we are privileged to serve," he concluded.
