Toros Take the Nightcap on Day Two of Tournament of Champions

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

TURLOCK -- Following an 0-2 start to the day, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros rode the pitching arm of senior Stephanie Jimenez (pictured) and the bat of junior outfielder Catherine Brown to a 5-2 nightcap victory over Hawaii-Hilo in day two of the Tournament of Champions hosted by Cal State Stanislaus.  The Toros will advance to the Gold Bracket and are just two Sunday wins away from being named the 2013 TOC Champion.

The nightcap was all about the pitching of senior starter Stephanie Jimenez who took a perfect game into the sixth and was two outs away from a no-hitter before allowing two runs in a 5-2 victory.  CSUDH's bats, which had been held to only two combined runs in the first two games of the day, came to life scoring the first five runs of the game to take a commanding 5-0 lead.  Junior Catherine Brown led the team going 3-for-3 with two runs while senior Christina Chavez drove in two runs.

The Toros played catch-up for three innings in their game opener only to fall in extra innings due to an unearned run resulting in a 2-1 loss.  Jimenez went 7.1 innings, allowing five hits and one run. Adriana Sanchez and Kaci McGinnis both had two hits each in the 8-hit game for CSUDH.

In the second game against Chaminade University, the Toros kept their bats swinging with seven hits on the game, but not bringing in more than one runner against the Silverswords in a 4-1 loss.  Sanchez had two hits on the game, and the lone RBI bringing home second baseman Veronica Vasquez.

On the day senior Jimenez allowed just seven hits and three runs over 14.1 innings of work.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros will play Sunday at 1 pm against the winner of the game between the top seeds of group A & E.
