Late Comeback Salvages Twinbill Split as Toros Take 5-4 Nightcap After 7-3 Loss at CS East Bay

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HAYWARD -- Cal State Dominguez Hills scored a pair of runs in the top of the 7th to take a 5-4 nightcap to salvage today's twinbill after committing four errors in a 7-3 opening game loss at Cal State East Bay.

Kevin Logan went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the loss opener before drawing a pair of walks in the nightcap win as the Toros improved to 20-20, 16-15 CCAA.

In game two, the Toros got on the board first with a pair of 3rd-inning runs after RBI singles by Ivory Thomas and Hayden Maurice.

CSUEB, however, took the lead an inning later as an error preceded a 3-run blast to left field.

CSUDH looked to retake the lead in the 5th after loading the bases with one out, but after scoring a run on a hit batter one out later, Pio reliever Ben O'Brien got out of the
jam by fanning Peter Ives swinging.

In the 6th, a leadoff blast gave CSUEB a 4-3 lead, only to have the Toros take the lead for good in the 7th.

In that frame, Thomas walked and stole second with one out, and advanced to third on a ground out.

Pinch-hitter David Steininger then reached base on a CSUEB error that would've ended the game, advanced to second after Chris Allen was plunked and scored when Ives redeemed himself with the game-winning hit up the middle.

Reliever Joseph Perez picked up the win after tossing 3.0 innings to improve to 3-2, after David Haerle tossed a strong 4.0 innings, scattering just 3 hits with a pair of earned runs allowed

The Pios opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the second, using three RBI baseknocks as part of four hits in the frame.

CSUDH replied with a pair in the 3rd on an Ivory Thomas 2RBI double to plate Danny Haley and Kevin Logan to cut into CSUEB's edge.

In the bottom of the 4th, however, two errors and wild pitch set the stage for a 2RBI single, with the third and final run of the inning crossing home plate on the third error of the frame.

The two teams exchanged single runs over the rest of the contest with Logan driving home the run as CSUEB took the win to open today's twinbill.

CSUDH starter Dimitri de la Fuente was the hard-luck loser, tossing 5.0 innings of work and allowing three earned runs.

Thomas added a 2-for-4 effort in the game, with Brandon Alexander leading all hitters with three hits in the CSUEB win.

The two teams conclude the series tomorrow morning, with first pitch set for 11 am.
