Crusaders Take Three-of-Four After 14-4 and 4-2 Sweep Over Toros

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NAMPA, Idaho -- Host Northwest Nazarene used a 7-run 5th inning to break open a 2-2 tie to coast to a 14-4 win in game one of today's non-conference twinbill over the Toros, before completing the sweep with a 4-2 win in the nightcap.  Ivory Thomas paced CSUDH with a 3-3, 2RBI performance in game one's loss.

With the losses, CSUDH drops to 16-17 overall heading into the final four weekends of CCAA competition.

The opener started quickly for the hosts after NNU scored single runs in both the 1st and 2nd innings of play, before the Toros tied the game in the 4th after a Brady Conlan RBi single and Danny Haley sacrifice fly.

NNU, however, slammed the door, literally, on any hopes of a Toro comeback in the 5th with 7 runs, including a grand slam by shortstop Jon Matos, who drove in 5 of the runs in the contest.

After the two teams exchanged single runs to make it 10-3, the Toros cut another run off their deficit in the 8th after a Thomas triple to dead center scored Rico Pena, who laced a one-out single to center.

But NNU trumped CSUDH's comeback attempt with four more runs in the 8th, the big blow coming on a 3-run blast by Greg Hata, who enjoyed a perfect 3-for-3 day with 4RBI and 4 runs scored.

David Haerle took the loss after lasting just 4.1 innings and allowing 7 earned runs, with Thomas the lone Toro to enjoy a multi-hit effort.

The nightcap saw the Crusaders again take the early lead, scoring 3 runs off Toro starter Matt Montgomery on just one hit as three walks contributed to the scoring.

NNU pushed its lead to 4-0 with a run in the 5th, only to have the Toro mount a comeback attempt in the 7th.

In the frame, a hit batter, walk and single loaded the bases with one out, setting the stage for Chris Allen who drove home two with a double down the left field line.

That proved to be the extent of the rally, however, as NNU starter Aaron Vaughn fanned Thomas looking and induced an unassisted grounder to first off the bat of David Steininger to close the Tuesday sweep.

Montgomery took the loss after tossing 5.0 innings and allowing all 4 earned runs, with Fernando Gallegos knocking a pair of hits to go along with Allen's 2 RBI.

CSUDH takes a week off before resuming CCAA action for consecutive road weekends, the first at San Francisco State beginning on Friday, April 12.
