Toros Drop Opener at Cal State East Bay, 5-2

Box Score

HAYWARD -- Senior Ivory Thomas led the Toros with a 2-for-4 performance and a pair of stolen bases, but host Cal State East Bay used a 4-run 3rd inning to take a 5-2 decision to open the key four-game set for both teams.

The loss drops the Toros to 19-19 on the year, and 15-14 in the CCAA.

After suffering a sweep at the hands of Cal State L.A. last week, one that including blowing a 5-run lead in the bottom of the 9th, the Pioneers scored the game's first run on a ground out in the 2nd off starter Sean Wardour, and the plated four runs an inning later, the big blow coming on a 2-run fielder's choice.

The Toros cut into their lead with single runs in the 4th and 6th on two of four CSUEB errors on the day, but it was too little too late against Matt Fontaine, who tossed a complete-game, 4-hitter in the win, fanning 10 Toros in the process.

Aside from Thomas' offense, Kevin Logan and Danny Haley earned the other two hits on the day, with the Toros unable to generate much offense in the loss.

The two teams go at it again tomorrow, with game one of the double-header set for an 11:00 am start.
