Big Inning Fuels 10-4 Toro Win at Cal Poly Pomona to Open CCAA Series

Box Score

POMONA -- Cal State Dominguez Hills sent 10 batters to the plate in a 5-run 7th inning that fueled a 10-4 win over host Cal Poly Pomona to open a four-game set.  Sean Wardour (pictured) went a strong 6.0 innings to pick up the win while Danny Haley went 3-for-5 to lead the offensive attack.

With the victory, the Toros win their fourth-straight in improving to 10-8, 7-6 CCAA, while the Broncos fall to 12-8, 5-8 CCAA.

After a pair of walk-off wins in Saturday's doubleheader sweep of CS San Bernardino, it looked to be another nail-biter as the Toros held a 2-1 lead over the hosts after 6 innings of play.

That's when things began to heat up for the Toro offense, at the same time unraveling for the Bronco pitchers.

After a single, error and sacrifice bunt moved runners to 2nd and 3rd, an intentional walk and Bubby Rossman sacrifice fly gave the Toros a 4-2 lead.

A hit batter loaded the bases once again, and Carlos Avila made them pay with a sharp single to left center that plated two, with a Haley RBI baseknock and another CPP error accounting for the final two runs of the inning to break the game open.

CPP answered with a pair of runs in its 7th inning at-bat, only to have CSUDH answer back with two, courtesy of an Ivory Thomas 2RBI double down the left field line that scored David Steininger and Chris Allen, who were both plunked earlier in the inning.

That was plenty for the Toro pitchers as Wardour tossed 51 strikes in 91 total pitches, allowing just one earned run in 6.0 innings of work to earn the decision, with relievers Matt Montgomery, Tyler Mark and Taylor Johnson each tossing a scoreless inning, with Mark and Johnson retiring the side in order in the 8th and 9th innings, respectively.

Haley paced the offense with 3 hits, as Steininger and Avila knocked two hits each.

Reigning CCAA Player of the Week Kevin Logan did his selfless part by going 1-for-2, laying down 3 sacrifice hits in the win.

Weather permitting, the two teams will go at it again tomorrow afternoon at Scolinos Field, with first pitch scheduled for 2 pm in Pomona.
