Haerle's Masterpiece Fuels 2-1 Win Over No. 21 CSUMB to Split Saturday Twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CARSON -- Junior David Haerle threw a complete-game, 60-pitch, 4-hit gem as Cal State Dominguez Hills regrouped with a 2-1 win over No. 21 Cal State Monterey Bay after the Otters took a 9-5 win to open the Saturday twinbill.

With the split, CSUDH improves to 14-14, 11-12 CCAA, while CSUMB moves to 20-9, 12-7 CCAA.

Pitted against undefeated Jeff Owen, who entered with a 6-0 record, Haerle was magnificent in the nightcap in outdueling his counterpart as the junior retired the final 11 Otters he faced after allowing a hit to lead off the 4th.

Haerle ended up with three strikeouts, tossing 31 of his 60 pitches for strikes.

With the teams tied at 1-1, CSUDH mounted its final rally of the game in the 6th as a Kevin Logan one-out single and subsequent steal put him at 2nd with one out.

After Owen fanned Brady Conlan on a 2-2 offering, Owen loaded the bases on walks to Chris Allen and Bubby Rossman, and then uncorked a wild pitch on his first offering to Dimitri De la Fuente to allow the speedy Logan to scamper home from third with the eventual game-winner.

Earning just 4 hits themselves, the Toros perfected small ball against Owen, scoring their first run in the 2nd to tie the game at 1-1 as Carlos Avila put himself in a rundown between 1st and 2nd, allowing Rossman to trot home from 3rd after singling up the middle to lead off the frame and moving to third on Avila's own baseknock.

Not lost in the nightcap was a defensive gem by Danny Haley in the 7th as he smothered a would-be bad-hop single off the bat of David Garcia with one out the 7th, and regrouped to fire across the diamond to Chris Allen at first base, who short-hopped and controlled the throw in a bang-bang play to nip Garcia at the bag before Haerle fittingly closed the game by covering 1B after a grounder was hit to Allen moving to his right.

In the opener, CSUMB used a 6-run 6th to take the 9-5 opener to take a two-games-to-none series lead.

After each team scored a run in the 1st inning, the visitors took the lead for good with two in the 5th and 6th in the 6th, sending 10 men to the plate and collecting 5 hits to put the game away.

The Toros mounted a rally with three runs in the 8th, the big blow courtesy of a Hayden Maurice 2RBI double, and added a single run in the 9th, but it was too little too late as four more errors contributed to the loss.

Matt Montgomery picked up the defeat after pitching 5.0 innings and allowing 3 earned runs with Haley leading the offensive charge with 2 of the team's 5 hits.

The two teams will wrap up their four-game set tomorrow morning on "Little League Day," with first pitch set for 11 am.  The contest can be heard live on the Toro Sports Network, with the pregame show starting at 10:30 am.
