Defense the Culprit in 7-2 Loss to No. 21 CS Monterey Bay

Box Score

CARSON -- Cal State  Dominguez Hills committed four errors in addition to two passed balls as visiting CS Monterey Bay took a 7-2 decision to open the four-game set at Toro Field.  CSUDH starter Dimitri de la Fuente took the hard-luck loss, tossing 6.0 innings and allowing three runs, all unearned.

With the loss, CSUDH dips to 13-13, 10-11 CCAA, with CSUMB improving to 19-8, 11-6 CCAA.

After a scoreless 1st, a pair of hits, a Toro error and a passed ball accounted for the first two runs of the game in the next inning.

CSUDH cut its deficit to 2-1 after Bubby Rossman grouned into a 4-6-3 double play with the bases loaded and none out, only to have CSUMB take that run back in the 5th on another Toro error.

The hosts again scraped back in the 7th after a Peter Ives ground out scored Rossman, who was hit by a pitch to open the frame.

But history repeated itself in the 8th as the Otters used a pair of hits and another Toro error to push their lead to 6-2, before a single run in the 9th closed the scoring.

Otter starter Chris Daniels went a strong 7.0 innings, scattering 5 hits with 6 Ks and 2 walks.

De la Fuente tossed 70 pitches in his 6.0 innings, with Thomas leading the Toro offense with 2 hits in the loss.

The two teams will battle again tomorrow in a Saturday morning twinbill, with first pitch set for 11 am on Toro Field.  The games can be heard live on the Toro Sports Network, beginning with a pre-game show at 10:30 am.
