Toros' 2012-13 Season Ends After 61-47 Setback at Cal Poly Pomona

Box Score

POMONA -- Needing a huge road win in the regular season finale, as well as some help by a southern California foe, the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team received neither as San Francisco State defeated UC San Diego before the Toros fell at Cal Poly Pomona, 61-47, ending the 2012-13 campaign for first-year head coach Molly Goodenbour and her team.

Robynn Cochran enjoyed a double-double of 12 points and 12 boards in the loss.

With the loss, CSUDH ends at 9-17, 8-14 CCAA, a marked improvement of seven more total and six more league wins than the previous season.

After Kielyn Wilson gave the Toros a 2-0 lead to start the game, it was all Pomona the rest of the half as the Broncos built a 17-7 lead at the 9:24 mark and reaching a 30-12 advantage seven minutes later before settling for a 30-15 edge at the break.

The Toros made a run to open the second half as an Emilie Boege jumper, and buckets by Joi Bertrand and senior Siedah Wilson brought CSUDH's deficit to just 11 at 36-25 with 15:23 left in regulation and to 10 on another Boege bucket a minute later.

But the Broncos, fueled by "Senior Night," would not be denied, pushing their lead to 50-32 at the 8:12 mark and keeping the Toros to at least a 12-point deficit the rest of the way in the final 61-47 decision.

Boege had her best game as a Toro with nine points on 4-of-8 shooting, with Wilson adding seven.

The Toros out-scored the Broncos 32-31 in the second half en route to shooting 47.8%.

"Our goal was to make the CCAA tournament, and on the last day, we put ourselves in a position to do so but just couldn't make it over the hump," begins Goodenbour.

"We have good pieces in place and I like the group we have to work with.  Each of the kids has improved, we have improved as a team and I have improved by being able to coach them.

"We have begun to build a foundation and change the culture of CSUDH basketball, and hopefully we'll be able to reach our goal of making the CCAA playoffs and the NCAA tourney in the near future."

Next season the Toros return the majority of their team with two seniors in Wilson and Kira DeMorales finishing their eligibility.
