No. 5 Toros Rebound in 5-1 Win After Coyotes Take 6-4 (8) Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CARSON -- Fifth-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills rode a stellar pitching performance by senior Stephanie Jimenez and a trio of batters with two hits apiece as the Toros salvaged a split against Cal State San Bernardino on Toro Diamond with a 5-1 win after the visitors scored 6 unanswered runs in a 6-4, 8-inning affair to take the opener.

With the split, CSUDH moves to 12-4, 4-2 CCAA, while CSUSB now stands at 8-12, 5-5 CCAA.

After scoring four runs in the first two innings in the opener, the Toros again broke the game open early with four runs in the first two innings as a four-hit 1st that included RBI baseknocks by Christina Chavez and Kaci McGinnis, as well as a fielder's choice that brought in a run to give CSUDH a 3-0 lead after one, a lead that reached 4-0 after Alyssa Cruz scored on wild pitch after opening the frame with a double down the left field line.

CSUSB tried to duplicate its game one comeback with a single run in the 5th, but Jimenez, who fanned 7 without a walk, retired the final seven batters she faced to pick up her 7th win of the year.

Brittany Brenner, Chavez and Cruz each belted two hits in the win, despite the Toros making three miscues in the field.

In the opener, another four-hit 1st inning gave CSUDH a 3-0 lead, with the big blow coming on a Veronica Vazquez 2RBI double.

Up 4-0, the Yotes staged a rally with a pair of runs in both the 4th and 6th frames to knot the game at 4-4, before finishing the scoring with another 2-run outburst in the 8th, in the process knocking out Toro starter Lauren Harper, who suffered the eventual loss.

Sanchez led the Toros with a pair of hits, while three Coyotes managed two hits in the game, with Alyssa Flores driving in three.

The two teams will conclude their four-game set tomorrow, with first pitch of game one set for a 12 noon start.  Both games can be heard live on the Toro Sports Network.
