Coyotes Take 4-2 Win to Open League Series

Box Score

SAN BERNARDINO -- Junior catcher Alex Sixtos led the Toro offense with two of the team's five hits, but host Cal State San Bernardino scored a single run in each of the first three innings en route to a 4-2 win over CSUDH to open the four-game set.

With the loss, CSUDH sees its 3-game win streak snapped in falling to 6-8, 3-6 CCAA, while CSUSB improves to 9-4, 3-2 CCAA.

The hosts took advantage of starter Sean Wardour's wildness in the first as Aaron Beckley led of the game with a base hit, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on wild pitches by Wardour.

After the hosts doubled their lead with a one-out homer in the 2nd, CSUSB made it 3-0 on a fielder's choice which drove in Remington Miller, who reached on a fielder's choice himself.

The Toros finally made some noise in the 4th as Carlos Avila knocked in Chris Allen wtih an RBI single up the middle after Allen drew a one-out walk.

The Coyote lead was cut to one one batter later as Danny Haley executed a suicide squeeze to bring home Aaron Gray.

It was too little too late, however, as CSUSB brought home an insurance run in the 7th.

CSUDH had a golden opportunity to tie the game in its last at-bat after loading the bases with one out, but reliever Matt LeVert fanned Tony McClendon and then induced Ivory Thomas to fly out to end the game.

The Toros managed just five hits in the game, while committing three errors.  A pair of Coyotes earned two hits each in the win as Kerry Kelley pitched 7.0 innings for the decision.

The two teams will hook up for round two tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch set for 2 pm at Fiscalini Field.
