Toros Sweep Twinbill at No. 18 UC San Diego, 9-2 and 3-1

LA JOLLA -- Capitalizing on momentum from yesterday's win over No. 18 UC San Diego, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros rode 5.1 innings by Joseph Perez in his first NCAA start and a pair of hits by three players including Carlos Avila (pictured) to take a 9-2 win over the same Tritons in game one before using a quintet of hurlers in the 3-1 nightcap win to sweep the afternoon double-header.

With their third-consecutive win, the Toros improve to 6-7, 3-5 CCAA, while the Tritons fall to 9-6, 4-4 CCAA.

Spurred by an 8-2 win in yesterday's contest, the Toros continued their offensive momentum by plating three runs in their first two at-bats, courtesy of a Chris Allen sacrifice fly in the 1st and a David Steninger 2RBI single in the 2nd.

After the Tritons cut their deficit in half with a run in the bottom half of the 2nd, the Toros put the game away with 6 runs over the 6th and 7th innings of play, with a pair of RBI doubles by Avila and Haley accounting for a pair of runs in the 6th, and a Triton error scoring the final of four runs one inning later.

That was plenty for Perez, who followed Dimitri De la Fuente's stellar performance with 5.1 stellar innings of his own, with Matt Montgomery tossing 3.2 innings in relief for his first save of the year.

Perez scattered six hits in the win, fanning 3 with just one earned run allowed as Steininger, Spencer Maxey and Avila leading CSUDH's offense with two hits each.

The 7-inning nightcap saw the Toros again get on the board first after an Allen sacrifice fly plated Steininger, who tripled to begin the game.

UCSD again showed its comeback ability by tying the game in their 1st inning at-bat, only to have the Toros take the lead for good with a single run in the 5th on a Maxey suicide squeeze, adding an insurance run in the 7th on another Maxey at-bat, this time an RBI single to center.

Danny Nieves earned the start and tossed 2.2 innings, with David Haerle notching the win with 0.2 innings of work, and Taylor Johnson picking up the save with 0.2 innings.

Avila went 2-for-3 to lead the Toros, with Maxey driving home 2 of the 3 CSUDH runs.

CSUDH will continue CCAA games on the road with a pair of single games at CS San Bernardino on Thursday and Friday, followed by a twinbill in Carson on Saturday morning at 11 am.
