Seawolves Down Toros in 72-71 Thriller

Box Score

CARSON -- Freshmen Julia Poecksteiner (pictured) and Monay Lee led the Toros with 17 points apiece, but visiting Sonoma State benefited from seven more attempts from the free throw line in completing a come-from-behind 72-71 win tonight in Carson.

The Toros raced to an 11-point edge three times, the last on a Fia Hoskinson jumper with 5:22 left in the first half before settling for a 36-27 halftime lead on the strength of 10 points from Lee and 6 from Julia Poecksteiner, as well as a substantial 24-16 edge in rebounds over the first 20 minutes of play.

Both teams shot over 40% from the floor as the Toros dished 13 assists on their 16 made buckets.

After the break, the Seawolves found their range, getting to within 41-38 on a Travis Newman bucket with just over 5 minutes gone by.

Bolstered by Poecksteiner and Kielyn Wilson, as well as fast-break lay-up by Robynn Cochran, CSUDH's edge again reached 11 at 10:28, keeping that advantage through the next minute.

A pair of SSU free throws sandwiched between two Seawolf buckets brought the guests to within 55-51, eventually tying the game at 55-all on two more free throws by Brianna Burgos, before SSU re-took the lead at 6:03.

CSUDH took momentum back on a tip-in by Kira Demorales and a lay-up by Breanna Garcia, only to have SSU answer back, again taking a lead at 70-69 on a Kristina Fahey bucket with 1:26 left in the game.

Poecksteiner answered with a bucket with 1:02 left, until a Toro foul set the stage for two Burgos freebies with 17 ticks left to go.

After a Toro time-out, Garcia drove the lane and unleased an attempt in the paint, but a rim out and subsequent SSU rebound wtih 2 seconds left sealed the deal after another Toro foul.

As a team, CSUDH shot 50.9% from the floor compared to 47.3% for SSU, with the Seawolves boasting four players in double-figure scoring.

The Toros will look to snap their three-game skid tomorrow night as San Francisco State visits Carson for a 5:30 pm, after CSUDH honors two seniors in Siedah Wilson and Demorales in a pre-game "Senior Day" ceremony.
