Baseball Opens 2013 With 9-1 Win Over Academy of Art

Box Score

CARSON -- Senior Sean Wardour threw a pre-determined 4.0 innings and allowed just one hit to pick up his first win of the year as the Toros took their 2013 season opener in a convincing 9-1 decision over Academy of Art to kick off the 3-game set.

The win marks the second-consecutive season-opener the Toros have won in improving to 1-0 on the year, while AAU falls to 0-1.

Wardour was efficient to start the game, inducing the Urban Knights into a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first.

Toro newcomer Ivory Thomas walked to start the Toros first at-bat of the year -- a feat that proved to be a harbinger of things to come -- stole second and third, and scored on a passed ball to light up the Toro Field scoreboard in the bottom of the first.

That's where the score remained until the 3rd when CSUDH's bats produced 5 runs on AAU starter Ryan Donahoe, with Tony McClendon belting a 2RBI single, followed by another 2RBI baseknock, this time courtesy of a Chris Allen triple one batter later.

CSUDH added on three in the fourth off AAU reliever Yoshi Uemura with Charles Rossman, McClendon and an Urban Knight error plating the runs to account for the final scoring.

Newcomer David Haerle was the second pre-determined pitcher to enter the contest, and the Green Valley native didn't disappoint as he tossed 4.0 innings of no-hit ball, also fanning four without a walk.

Rossman finished with two of the Toros' five hits on the afternoon, with Thomas drawing four walks sandwiched around a 1-for-1 Toro debut.  McClendon drove in three RBI in the win, with senior 1B Chris Allen knocking in a pair.

Kevin Decker belted two of the four AAU hits and drove in the lone Urban Knight run of the game.

The two teams hook up again tomorrow to wrap up the 3-game set, with first pitch of game one's twinbill starting at 11 am on Toro Field.
