Winning Streak Hits Four After 69-53 Win Over Academy of Art

Toros claim women's crown in Las Vegas Tournament

Box Score

LAS VEGAS, Nv. -- There's an adage that says, "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas."  But if the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team has a say, they'll definitely look to bring their play back to California after another double-digit win, this time a 69-53 decision over Academy of Art to bring their record to 6-2 after their fourth-straight win.

Tayler Champion again played like her namesake after tallying game-highs in points with 22 and boards with 16 as four Toros notched at least 10 points in the win.

Like yesterday, CSUDH took control from the start en route to a 13-4 lead on the last of two foul shots by Champion at the 15:46 mark of the first half.

Unlike yesterday, however, AAU didn't fold as it got to within one at 15-14 four minutes later, before tying the contest at 17-17 with just over 11 minutes left in the first session.

A Monay Lee triple spurred a 7-0 run, only to have the Knights claw all the way back to take the lead at 29-28 with 3:19 left, before a Breanne Garcia trey, a Talia Rayford layup and Lee foul shot gave CSUDH a 36-32 lead entering the half.

The Toros kept the pressure on AAU after the break, taking their first double-figure lead at 48-38 on a Champion triple at the 13:30 mark, extending it to 67-47 after a Garcia bucket 10 minutes later, all but sealing the outcome en route to the 69-53 final.

Rayford added 15 in the win, with Lee's 13 and Garcia's 10 rounding out the four Toros in double figures.  CSUDH dominated the boards to the tune of a 51 to 39 advantage, although their 18 turnovers contributed in 14 points for the Knights.

Rayford and Lee each picked up three steals to share game-high honors to help counter CSUDH's 35.9 shooting percentage from the floor.

CSUDH will resume action the first weekend of 2014, hosting Sonoma State on Friday, January 3, with first tip set for 5:30 pm in the Torodome.
