Toros Leave Little Doubt in Convincing 77-53 Win Over Cal State L.A.

Box Score

CARSON -- Junior Tayler Champion's 16 points led four Toros who scored in double-figures as Cal State Dominguez Hills evened the regular season series against cross-town rival Cal State L.A. with a resounding 77-53 win over the Golden Eagles on a cool Sunday December afternoon.

With the win, CSUDH improves to 4-2, 2-2 CCAA, while CSULA suffers its first league loss of the year, now standing at 5-2, 3-1 CCAA.

After splitting the first 24 points scored over the first seven minutes of play, the Toros began connecting from long range as 3-pointers by Amber Wharton and Talia Rayford followed a Monay Lee bucket to give the Toros a 20-12 cushion.

CSUDH enjoyed its first double-digit lead on a Breanne Garcia jumper with 4:49 left in the first half, with a Champion bucket at the :30 mark giving the Toros their 13-point lead at the break.

The hosts continued to put pressure on their cross-town rival after the break, as a Rayford fastbreak bucket giving CSUDH its first 20-point lead, a 48-27 advantage.

A Golden Eagle run over the next two minutes brought CSULA back to within striking distance at 48-36, but buckets by Rayford and free throws by Lee and Wharton pushed the Toro edge back to 19 halfway through the half, and an Arianna Hanson basket with just 1:51 left giving CSUDH its biggest lead of the game at 75-48.

CSUDH shot 43.5% from the field and a sizzling 44% from long-range as the Toros drained seven more triples than their counterparts.

The Golden Eagles were dominated on the boards, bringing down just 25 compared to 49 for the Toros, with CSUDH's offensive tally equaling CSULA's total.

Lee led all players with 11 rebounds, with Champion tallying 10 for the game's lone double-doubles of the day.

CSUDH's quick hands and athleticism also were on display as the Toros swiped 11 steals to just six for CSULA, also racking up 22 assists to the visitors' 11.

The Toros take to Las Vegas this week for the two-day Las Vegas Challenge, hosted by Dixie State, and will take on the hosts for a 6 pm tip on Wednesday.
