Regular Season Ends on Sour Note as Broncos Blank Toros, 1-0

Senior Jio Santana took the only shot on goal for the Toros in today's loss to close the regular season

POMONA -- Needing a strong showing to close out the regular season after starting the week as the No. 6 seed in the NCAA West Region, the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team suffered its consecutive 1-0 defeat, this time at Cal Poly Pomona to close the regular season and put its regional rank and hopes of an NCAA postseason berth in jeopardy.

With the loss, CSUDH dips to 9-6-3, 7-6-3 CCAA, having posted just one win in its last six tries, with three losses with no goals scored.

Unlike Friday's contest at cross-town rival and the region's top seed in Cal State L.A. in which the game's lone goal was scored late, today's score came early as Jesus Mitre connected at the 13:34 mark after taking a low cross and sending it by Toro keeper Markus Dickerson, just one of three shots in the period by the host Broncos, who honored their seniors before first kick.

That's where the score remained despite an offensive second half in which CPP doubled CSUDH's shot output.

The Toros had over three minutes towards the end of the game to equalize as CPP's Abiel Coronado was given his second yellow of the game, but the Bronco defense remained stellar as CPP keeper Andrew Todd didn't face a shot on goal in that stretch.

Dickerson finished with four saves in what could be his final game as a Toro as one of nine seniors, pending Selection Sunday on November 10, as the NCAA announces which teams qualify for the postseason.

Francisco Lara led all players with four shots taken on a sunny yet cool afternoon.
