Toros Swept by Otters on "Dig For A Cure" Night

Box Score

CARSON -- Visiting Cal State Monterey Bay used a dominating 12 to 3 block advantage to take a 3-0 sweep over Cal State Dominguez Hills during the Toros' designated "Dig For A Cure" night in the Torodome.

Whitney Lee led the Toro offense with 11 kills and a .476 hitting percentage as CSUDH drops to 8-7, 1-6 CCAA, with CSUMB moving to 11-4, 5-2 CCAA.

The visitors came out strong in the opener, stretching a 4-1 lead into a 19-11 advantage midway through the set behind five kills from Julia Ashen and four from Victoria Clardy, before scoring the final four points of the set in a 25-16 decision despite four kills from Elizabeth Krieger.

Set two was more of the same as the Otters raced to a 6-1 lead before pushing it to 15-8 on a Clardy blast.  A subsequent unforced error forced a Toro time out, but three Ashen kills during an 8-3 run brought CSUMB to set point at 23-12.  Kills by Whitney Lee, Abbey Prusa and Alijah Gunsaulus, however, coupled with the strong serving of Krieger, brought the Toros to within striking distance at 24-20.

CSUMB, however, used an overpass after lenghty rally to finally put the Toros away as Clardy did the honors with a blast off Kathleen Molina's hands in the 25-20 Otter win.

CSUDH played its guests closer to begin set three, trailing by just one early in the frame.  The Otters, however, again used their size to diffuse the Toro attack in building a 15-11 lead before a Lee kill, a Dana Brown dink, four Lee service aces and an Otter attack error gave the Toros an 18-15 edge.

The Otters clawed back, however, to knot the game at 19-all and took the lead for good after a Toro error, with three different Otter attackers chipping in down the stretch in the 25-21 outcome.

Ashen led all attackers with 19 kills while Clardy finished with 13.  The Otters hit .274 on the night compared to .103 for the hosts, while the Toros also made 24 attack errors compared to 14 for CSUMB, with the Otter block altering many CSUDH attempts on the night.

Tonight's "Dig For A Cure" was sponsored by the CCAA Conference, with Jamba Juice also lending a hand with its own "Drink Pink" promotion.

During the event, donations were made to benefit breast cancer research, with one lucky donator winning a "Think Pink" goodie bag filled with commemorative items, including a pink volleyball signed by the 2013 Toros volleyball team.

CSUDH will take to the road next weekend before returning home on October 18 for arguably the toughest weekend in league play, hosting UCSD on Friday and CSUSB the following night.
