Toros Earn Hard-Fought 1-1 Tie at No. 17 UCSD in 2OT

Box Score

LA JOLLA -- A pair of second-half penalty kicks was all either offense could muster against a pair of stingy defenses, and the result was a 1-1 double overtime tie at No. 17 UC San Diego on a warm afternoon.

Alejandro Covarrubias netted the first score at the 65:01 mark in the tie as CSUDH moves to 8-2-3, 6-2-3 CCAA in running its unbeaten streak to four.

The first half was scoreless as the two teams combined for just nine shots, with the visitors taking six.

One of the goose eggs came off the board 20 minutes into the second half after a caution was issued to Triton Brett Sampiere, with Covarrubias making the hosts pay by beating UCSD keeper Josh Cohen for a 1-0 lead at 65:01.

That's where the score remained until the Toros returned the favor 20 minutes later as UCSD was awarded a penalty kick opportunity, one that Andisheh Bagheri capitalized on to knot the score at 1-1 with just 4:06 left in regulation.

CSUDH was all offense compared to UCSD's defense in the extra periods, taking a 3-0 shot edge in the first extra session, and a 7-0 advantage in the second extra session.

Cohen, however was up to the challenge as the Toros offensive pushes went unrewarded.

The Toros finished with a convincing 25-10 shot advantage and an 8-5 edge in corners, with Cohen making three saves on the night compared to CSUDH keeper Markus Dickerson, who finished with two.

This marks the second-consecutive 1-1 double overtime draw the teams have forged after an identical result on September 13, when UCSD was ranked No. 25.

CSUDH will conclude its regular season home schedule on Sunday against cross-town rival Cal State L.A., after honoring nine seniors who will play their final regular season game in Toro Stadium.
