Toros Debut at No. 11 in NFCA Preseason Poll

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Already chosen to defend its Caifornia Collegiate Athletic Association Title, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros were tabbed as the No. 11-ranked team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association preseason poll, it was announced earlier.

Valdosta State, which claimed the 2012 NCAA title, was the unanimous choice for the top spot after receiving all 16 first-place votes, with NCAA runner-up UC San Diego coming in second.

Led by reigning CCAA Coach of the Year in Jim Maier, now in his 13th year as head coach, the Toros concluded their 2012 campaign with a mark of 45-15, including a 27-7 record in CCAA play.

CSUDH welcomes back a strong roster, including four key seniors in All-Region selections in 3B Jessica Hall and SP Stephanie Jimenez along with All-CCAA selections in SP Lauren Harper and SS Christina Chavez, who also earned the CCAA Newcomer of the Year nod.

In addition to UCSD, Cal State Monterey Bay made the poll at No. 17 to round out the three CCAA schools included.

The NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll is voted on by 16 NCAA Division II head coaches, two representing each of the eight NCAA regions.

The Toros kick off their 2013 season at the Cal State Stanislaus hosted Best of the West Tournament this weekend, kicking off against Holy Names on Saturday at 11 am.
