Humboldt State Escapes With 57-54 Win Over Toros

Box Score

CARSON -- Junior sharp-shooter Pierson Williams had his 3-point attempt at the buzzer blocked as Humboldt State escaped with a thrilling 57-54 win tonight in Carson.  Myron Green (pictured) and DeShaun Freeman led the Toros with 9 points each in the loss.

With CSUDH's second-straight loss, the Toros fall to 10-9, 6-6 CCAA, while HSU improves to 7-9, 3-9 CCAA.

The Toros jumped out to a 10-4 lead behind 6 points by Alex Strauther, including a triple at the 15:46 mark, stretching it to 23-11 on a Matt Cain 3-pointer five minutes later.

CSUDH's edge hovered around 12 over the next five minutes, before a Rakim Brown bucket at 4:33 cut HSU's deficit to 28-22, bring the 'Jacks back in the game.

The Toros, however, answered with their own run, a 9-8 variety, to give the hosts a 37-30 lead entering the break.

CSUDH nailed 46.4% of its shots from the field including a near-perfect 5-of-6 from the foul line, led by Myron Green's 3-of-4 from the line and 7 points.

Strauther was the instigator in the second half, checking in off the bench prior four minutes into the period and assisting on a bucket, and connecting on a lay-in that floated high off the backboard and down through the twine to give CSUDH a 51-44 lead with 10:46 left in the game.

The 'Jacks would answer, using a 7-2 run to cut their deficit to 53-51 with under five minutes left, eventually taking their first lead of the game at 56-54 after a Toro turnover, a Brown bucket and made free throw after he was fouled.

With Humboldt State leading 57-54 and 25.7 left, the Toros inbounded and set up for the last shot, with Cain and Strauther missing 3-point attempts, only to have HSU rebound the ball but throw it away to give the Toros back the ball with 7.3 ticks on the clock.

Pierson Williams curled around a screen and received the ball in 3-point territory, but Brett McConnell used his entire 6'6" frame to get a hand on the attempt as the buzzer sounded to give the 'Jacks the thrilling win.

The Toros finished shooting 39% from the floor, with the 'Jacks finding their range late to the tune of 41%.

Turnovers proved huge down the stretch as CSUDH committed 18 compared to 13.

The Toros will look to reverse the current trend next weekend as UC San Diego visits Carson to kick off the month of February.  The game will be streamed live on www.GoToros.com/live.
