Balance and Defense Integral in 65-55 Win Over CS Stanislaus

Box Score

CARSON -- Junior sharp-shooter Pierson Williams scored 17 points including 5-of-7 from downtown and four Toros nearly scored in double-figures while holding visiting CS Stanislaus to just 30% shooting from the floor as the Toros took a 65-55 win over the Warriors tonight in Carson.

With the win, CSUDH improves to 9-7, 5-4 CCAA, while CSUS sees its two-game win streak snapped in falling to 6-7, 3-6 CCAA.

The Toros took charge from opening tip, storming to an 11-0 lead just four minutes into the game.  The lead ballooned to 24-6 six minutes later after an Alex Strauther triple, before CSUS finally reached double figures on a Marcus Walters jumper with 5:35 left in the first half, with CSUDH taking a commanding 36-11 lead entering the break.

After intermission, CSUDH looked to put the game away after keeping its 25-point lead two minutes into the second half, but the Warriors began to play up to their namesake, chopping their deficit to 38-23 on a Walters triple.

The Toro lead looked to reach 20 on two occasions, the last coming on a Steffon Neal triple with 5:07 left in regulation that gave CSUDH a 55-37 edge, but CS Stanislaus scored 7 straight points to get within 11, before the Toros held on to the 10-point win.

Green added 8 with DeShaun Freeman, Matt Cain and Neal adding 7 points in the win as CSUDH finished shooting 46.7% from the field compared to just 29.5% for the Warriors.

Lamine Diame continued his huge play, pulling down a game-high 10 boards and posting a game-high 4 blocks.

CSUDH will look to make it three-straight tomorrow night as Chico State vists the Torodome after the Wildcats suffered a one-point heart-breaker at Cal State L.A. earlier tonight.  The game will be streamed live on the Toro Sports Network.
