Early Score Enough as UC San Diego Takes 1-0 Win Over Toros

Jio Santana out-shot the entire UC San Diego squad in tonight's loss
Box Score
LA JOLLA -- A UC San Diego header in the 22nd minute proved enough as the Tritons dealt Cal State Dominguez Hills a 1-0 defeat tonight to snap the Toros' modest two-game win streak.

With the loss, CSUDH falls to 3-5-1, 3-4 CCAA, while UCSD improves to 5-2-2, 4-1-2 CCAA.

Riding a two-game win streak in which the Toros out-scored their opponents 6-0, UCSD provided all the resistance CSUDH could handle tonight despite Jio Santana firing 7 shots.

The Tritons took a 1-0 lead in the first half in the 22nd minute after Evan Walker converted a header past Toro keeper Trey Mitchell.

That was enough to put UCSD on the defensive as the Toros out-shot the hosts 10-1 after the break, but were unable to find the back of the net behind the compacted Triton defense.

Twenty-seven fouls were called in the physical contest with UCSD keeper Cameron McElfresh saving 4 shots on goal compared to two by Mitchell.

CSUDH will look to get back on the winning track on Sunday as it travels to cross-town rival Cal State L.A., with first kick set for 11:30 am at Jesse Owens Track.
