CARSON -- One victory does not a season make for the new and improved Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team.  But when the victory comes over cross-town rival Cal State L.A. in the form of a sweep after 21 years of losses, then it sure makes the season more fun.

That certainly was the case tonight in Carson as the Toros handed the Golden Eagles a 25-23, 25-22, 25-23 defeat, extending their win streak to three while halting CSULA's win streak at two, all while moving into sole possession of second place in the CCAA.

Though not pretty -- the Toros were out-hit .165 to .163 -- the hosts earned the points when they needed them most, handing CSULA its first sweep of the year.

CSUDH started strong en route to an 18-8 lead on an Abbey Prusa kill.  CSULA whittled its deficit to 22-20 on the second Toro attack error and tied the set at 23-23 on another attack error, but consecutive kills by Corissa Santos earned the Toros the first set.

Set two was a mirror image of the opener as the two teams played nip-and-tuck, tying four times early with neither team enjoying more than a 3-point lead late.

The Toros looked comfortable after taking an 18-14 lead on a Dana Brown kill, but the visitors caught the Toros at 19-19 and were within one at 22-21 before two more Santos bombs and a CSULA attack error sent CSUDH into the locker room up two sets to none.

The two teams were tied seven times in set three until CSULA reeled off three consecutive points to take a 14-11 edge.  CSUDH, however, behind two kills and two CSULA errors, took the lead at 15-14, gaining much-needed momentum down the stretch.

Tying four more times, the last at 18-18, the Toros ran off the next three points to sieze control of the frame, and withstood a late Golden Eagle rally to take the set 25-23, and the match, 3-0.

Santos enjoyed a monster game with 12 kills and just two errors, good for a .455 hitting percentage.  Elizabeth Krieger led all attackers with 14 kills in the match, with Rose Greco pacing the defenders with 16 digs.

With the win, CSUDH takes sole possession of second place in the league at 6-6 4-1 CCAA, just half a game out of the top spot, with matches hosting Sonoma State and San Francisco State this weekend.
