Toros Reverse Trend in 2-0 Win Over CS Monterey Bay

Jio Santana made his first goal as a Toro count in tonight's 2-0 win
Box Score
CARSON -- After a pair of 2-0 losses, the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team reversed its fortunes in a 2-0 win over a game CS Monterey Bay club as a goal in the first three minutes and a goal in the final two minutes proved the difference in tonight's physical win.  CSUDH moves to 2-4-1, 2-3 CCAA, while the Otters remain winless at 0-5, 0-4 CCAA.

Junior Jio Santana began the scoring early taking a Miguel Vazquez feed and one-touching it by CSUMB keeper Cory Calder at 2:52 for one of seven shots the Toros took in the period, compared to just three for the Otters.

The Toros had a chance to double their edge after a Toro attacker was pulled down from behind to give CSUDH a penalty kick attempt.  Calder, however, was up to the challenge as he guessed right, literally, thwarting Aaron Salazar's blast to Calder's right.

The game looked to end at 1-0 until just 61 ticks remained in regulation, as Vazquez again set up the second and final goal.

After delivering a slot to Richard Molina, the redshirt freshman sent a through ball to Salazar, who beat Calder 1v1 for an empty netter insurance goal.

Keeper Trey Mitchell picked up the shutout win with three saves, while Calder repelled five Toro shots.

As a team, CSUDH out-shot CSUB 17-7, including a dominant 10-4 edge after the break.

A spirited contest, the two teams combined for 26 fouls, including seven cautions and one ejection.

The Toros will look to keep their momentum going on Sunday as Cal State East Bay pays a visit to Carson, with first kick set for 2 pm.
