Toros Take 7-5 Win Over Coyotes in Series Opener

Box Score

CARSON--Sako Chapjian hit a game changing homerun in the sixth inning to secure a 7-5 series opener win over the visiting Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes Thursday afternoon to kick off the final series of the season for the Toros.

CSUDH improves its record to 9-28 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, 13-32 overall.  The Coyotes, still battling to hold on to a top four spot for post-season,fell to 22-15 in the CCAA, 25-17 overall.

Cal State Dominguez Hills scored first with Matthew Young leading off with a single up the middle.  After stealing second, Drew Rodela grounded out to the first baseman, allowing young to take third.  Chapjian then connected for his first solid hit of the day with a single up the middle as well, scoring Young.

In the top of the second the Coyotes answered back with a single run to bring the score to one apiece.  Sean Wardour began to struggle in the second to hold off the swinging Coyotes, but with some crisp defense, he was able to get out of the inning.

Wardour's good fortune was short lived after allowing CS San Bernardino to take the lead with three runs scored in the third, along with two Toro errors.

Cal State San Bernardino would score their final run in the fifth inning, but luckily, San Bernardino's Matt Haney was called out for leaving second early with two out, saving Wardour from allowing any more runs in.

In the fifth inning the Toros were able to bring the score within two of the Coyotes, but it was the sixth inning when they secured the win.  Chapjian led the inning off with a solo homerun over the left field, bringing the score within one.

Chris Allen then followed with an infield single to the catcher.  After Chris Vopinek was hit for the second time in the game, Matt Akiyama advanced both of the runners another 90 feet after laying a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher.

Devon Ramirez then brought in the winning run after hitting a controversial double down the left field line to score both runners.  After the Coyotes starter Casey McCarthy hit the designated hitter Hector Gomez, he was retired.  Matthew Young could not be stopped though, with a single to right field, he was able to score the fourth and final run of the game.

Nick Plantz came in in relief for Wardour in the sixth inning and in 3.1 innings of work he was able to hold the Coyotes to just one run, shutting down the visiting offense and holding on for the 7-5 win.

Young led on the afternoon hitting 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, which included a triple, a walk, and a stolen base.  Allen was also 3-for-4 with a run scored.  Devon Ramirez finished 1-for-3 with a run scored, two RBI, and a double.

There was much more pink on the baseball field than usual, as the Toros hosted their annual Think Pink fundraiser, wearing pink in support of all those affected by breast cancer.  Throwing out the first pitch this afternoon was Dr. Sue Borrego, Cal State Dominguez Hills' Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs.

The Toros will take Toro Field for the final time this season as they recognize nine graduating seniors tomorrow afternoon beginning at approximately 2:40 p.m.
