Resiliency Key in Split For No. 10 Toros at No. 15 Chico State

Toros clinch berth in CCAA Tournament; seed still to be determined

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHICO -- After being nearly no-hit for the second day in a row in a 3-0 opening game loss, the 10th-ranked Toros came back strong in the nightcap for the second day in a row in their 5-0 win over 15th-ranked Chico State to split the day, and the series at two apiece.  Senior Khryssi Steele belted two hits and drove in three in the win.

With the nightcap win, the Toros move to 38-10, 24-6 CCAA, while the Wildcats end the series at 27-13, 18-1 CCAA.

Coming off a one-hit opening game loss, the Toros wasted little time in getting on board in the nightcap after consecutive singles and a sacrifice bunt in the second.  After a walk to load the bases, yesterday's game two hero in Brittany Brenner continued to wield her hot bat, stroking an RBI single for the game's first run.

Steele then tripled the run count with an opposite field double down the left field line to bring home to, and give starter Stephanie Jimenez a 3-0 cushion.

The Toros added two more runs in the sixth on four hits and a Wildcat error, with Steele adding another RBI base hit before Veronica Vazquez followed suit for a 5-0 lead.

That was plenty for Jimenez, who picked up her 19th win of the year after limiting Chico State to just two hits, and facing 24 batters on the day, 3 over the minimum required for a 7-inning game.

Stephanie Hua matched Steele with two hits in the win as CSUDH maintained its lead atop the CCAA standings with just four regular season games left.

In the opener, Wildcat Sam Baker was on track for her second consecutive perfect game through 4.1 innings of work, until she plunked Melissa Pacheco and walked Brenner, giving the Toros their first sniff of a rally against Baker.

The senior, however, buckled down and got the next two batters to keep her 3-0 lead intact after CSUC put up three runs on five hits in their first at-bat of the game on three-consecutive RBI hits.

The only drama that remained was whether Baker could achieve her second-consecutive no-hitter, but Vazquez spoiled her bid with a two-out double in the sixth in the eventual 3-0 loss.

Starter Lauren Harper suffered the loss after alowing 10 hits and all three earned runs.

With the split, the Toros become one of two teams to clinch a berth in the upcoming CCAA Tournament, as UC San Diego joined CSUDH after a sweep of Sonoma State today in Rohnert Park to win the series three games to one.

CSUDH will take a week off before traveling for its final CCAA four-game series in two weeks, heading to CS San Bernardino looking to secure a high seed in the following week's CCAA Championship Tournament.
